Vice President of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the head of “Viasna” human rights centre Ales Bialiatski has commented to charter97.org website on the decision of the EU to extend and “Freeze” sanctions against Belarusian officials.

“Demands of the EU to the Belarusian authorities are absolutely justified, but it is obvious that the time has come for Minsk to take some more unambiguous steps as an answer to these demands. According to a Brest human rights activist Raman Kisliak, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has registered an individual complaint by a For Freedom movement member Inha Abramava. The complaint was submitted on 22 December 2008, after a number of unsuccessful appeals against the activist’s detention in Brest Leninski Police Department Temporary Detention Facility, where the woman was reportedly subjected to sex discrimination, which is prohibited by the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
