06__441087.jpgThe Belarusian Helsinki Committee has addressed the General Prosecutor’s office with a statement expressing its deep concern regarding the repeated acts of vandalism at a number of memorial sites, including the Kurapaty memorial forest and Hebrew cemeteries of Vitsebsk, Barysau, Homel and Minsk. As yet, all of the crimes remain unpunished.

Герб ГомеляOn 20 December the Legal Initiative Homel office hosted the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Contest award ceremony.

According to head of the office Leanid Sudalenka, the panel members received numerous essays reflecting various aspects of human rights and freedoms, including their protection and promotion. Уладзімер Кацора (Гомель)Uladzimir Katsora, Homel activist of the democratic forces, has received answers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the Constitutional Court of Belarus to his inquiry concerning the restoration of the legal status of the NGO ‘Civil Initiatives’.

Mr. Katsora directed his appeal to the abovementioned state organs in October 2008. ‘Civil Initiatives’ was liquidated by Homel oblast court in 2003. Three years later the UN Human Rights Committee confessed that the organization was liquidated unlawfully, with violation of the freedom of association, and therefore was to be restored. Specnaz na mirnym shodzieSiarhei Shytsikau, judge of Tsentralny district court of Homel, turned down the lawsuit of Piatro Kuzniatsou, Andrei Tolchyn, Alexander Protska and Natallia Shchukina against the prohibition of pickets by the city authorities. The plaintiffs intended to hold these pickets in September, during the agitation state of the election to the parliament. By means of such actions the civil activist intended to explain their position to the electorate and agitate against the pro-regime candidates who were running for their second term at the parliament.
