The United Nations Human Rights Committee at its October session examined the case of ex-presidential candidate Aliaksandr Kazulin and found violations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, says human rights activist Raman Kisliak, Radio Racyja reports.

β€œHe was detained, beaten and arrested during a rally after the elections. Then, he was convicted of hooliganism and was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison,” says Mr. Kisliak.

Aliaksandr Kazulin did not agree with the sentencing and challenged the violation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. In particular, he referred to ill-treatment, arbitrary arrest, poor detention conditions, violation of the presumption of innocence and the guarantees of a fair trial.
