The human rights public association “Movement of supporters for the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights PAKT” has been registered in Lithuania. This was announced by the NGO’s executive director Leanid Sudalenka.

According to him, it is impossible to receive official registration in Belarus, because the authorities suppress any initiative created without its control.

The founders tried to register the group in Belarus, but the officials of the Ministry of Justice refused to register it, thus violating the right to freedom of association. The Supreme Court, as a court of first instance, upheld the ban. Currently, the founders of the organization are in the process of appealing to the Prosecutor General’s Office, then on behalf of 52 citizens of Belarus they are going to submit a complaint to the UN Committee on Human Rights.

We are grateful to the Lithuanian colleagues who assisted in the registration of the organization in this country. We hope that in a short time and at home there will be no artificial obstacles to the exercise of civil rights and freedoms,” said Mr. Sudalenka.

PAKT brings together citizens who submit complaints to the UN Human Rights Committee. The organization was created as a platform for dialogue with the authorities on the subject of strict compliance with the decisions taken at the United Nations. Chairman of the organization is Professor, Doctor of Law Mikhail Pastukhou, executive director – lawyer and human rights activist from Homel Leanid Sudalenka.

Activities on behalf of an unregistered organization are criminalized in Belarus.
