Ales Bialatski met his friends and colleagues, human rights defenders and lawyers from abroad and from various regional departments of Human Rights Center “Viasna” in Belarus.

The meeting began in high atmosphere and was informative and memorable. Human rights defenders exchanged information and opinions and coordinated their plans. There were a lot of talks about imprisonment and long-expected release under amnesty of Ales Bialatski, who is the President of Human Rights Center “Viasna”.

Vice-president of Human Rights Center “Viasna” Valancin Stefanovicz says:

- I believe that Ales’s release is connected first of all with the principal position of the EU regarding the release of Belarusian political prisoners, with the international pressure on the Belarusian authorities that had been putting during those three years not only by international organizations, such as the EU and the UN, but by our colleagues, representatives of international human rights organizations as well.

And we, our actions and our organization also contributed to the release.

The question about political prisoners in not removed from the agenda, says the Head of Swedish Human Rights organization Ostgruppen Martin Uggla:

- The release of Alies Bialiacki is a great joy, of course. We will continue to collaborate. All political prisoners have to be released.

Ales Bialatski was released on the 21st with 70th anniversary of liberation of Belarus from Nazi aggressors”. He was imprisoned for 1052 days.

The main problem of political prisoners in Belarus is not to lose their dignity.

“Our prison system, where people are placed in order to be reeducated, is to be reformed. But in complex with the reforming of all the state”, – says recently released political prisoner , the President of Human Rights Center “Viasna” Ales Bialatski:

- Prisoners in Belarus are rather a big group of people, who have problems, different kinds of problems – psychological, psychic problems. It would be necessary to extend staff of psychologist first of all. It isn’t done. They are kept as animals. Humane society has to give opportunity of proper keeping even of criminals, so that person didn’t lose his dignity.

P.S. On the 28th of May Alaksandar Lukaszenka signed a decree about reorganization of penal colonies. Time will show to what extent this will change the status of prisoners.
