Pavał Levinaŭ, Viciebsk

Vitebsk human rights activist has filed applications for 3 pickets in three places of the city, each of which is planned to take place for just one minute. Levinau wants to hold the actions on December 10, the International Human Rights Day.

Paval Levinau declared pickets as single actions; he is the only person who is going to take part in them. Pickets can be considered “flying” in the direct sense, because the human rights defender wants to visit three places of Vitebsk approved by authorities for public events and spend only one minute there.

According to human rights defender, the prohibition or approval of his action will be a clear demonstration of the true attitude of the state institutions to the values of a democratic society. After all, in Vitebsk, for already four years all public events at the initiative of representatives of democratic forces have been systematically prohibited by local authorities. Thus, the right of citizens to express their opinions freely and publicly has been violated for a long time.

By the way, the human rights activist Paval Levinau is not the only one who has filed applications for a peaceful event on the International Day of Human Rights. Aliaksandr Kuzniatsou, the chairman of the city branch of the BNF has filed the application to the administration of Kastrychnitski district of the town. The aim of the event, as described in the application, is “protest against political repressions in the country, solidarity with political prisoners and demand of their immediate release and full rehabilitation”. Khrystafor Zhaliapau, the coordinator of the movement “For Freedom” in Vitebsk region and Aliaksei Gaurutsikau, the activist of organizing committee of the Social Democratic Party “Narodnaya Hramada” and an authorized representative of prisoner Mikalai Statkevich have also filed applications to administration of Pershamaiski district.
