The Human Rights Committee has recognized the violation of rights of Brest democratic community on freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly.

The applicants of this individual message were Iryna Laurouskaya, Dzianis Turchanyak, Valery Faminsky and human rights activist Raman Kislyak.

Raman Kislyak tells that the complaint was the result of the picketing ban on various issues related to the establishment of the monument to the 1000th anniversary of Brest:

– Pickets were banned on the grounds that the only place for picketings in our town is “Locomotive” stadium. But we announced picketings on Gogol Street, not far from the place where it was proposed the monument to be established. Of course, the appealing in our country did not give results, so at the end of year 2009 a complaint was made to the UN Committee on Human Rights.

Raman Kislyak believes that the decision of the Committee is a step to eliminate the common problem of all cities in Belarus – the ban of picketings by the authorities.
