On August 4, it will be two years since the arrest of Ales Bialiatsky – Vice-President of the International Federation of Human Rights, the head of the Belarusian human rights center “Viasna” closed by the authorities. International Day of Solidarity with Belarusian civil society is timed to this date.

Ales Bialiatsky was detained in Minsk on August 4, 2011. In November of the same year he was convicted of concealing income on a large scale and sentenced to four and a half years’ imprisonment in a maximum security prison with confiscation of property.

The basis for the prosecution was Ales Bialiatsky’s having foreign bank accounts. Money from these accounts was used for human rights activity. The court did not take into account the fact that the damage allegedly caused to the state by Ales Bialiatsky was repaid by donations from citizens in full.
