A meeting of Ambassador Janez Lenarcic, the Director of the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), with representatives of opposition has been held in Minsk on January, 23. International representatives and Democratic leaders have discussed the issue of changing of electoral legislation in Belarus.

“This is not a question of technical amendments to the legislation; it is an attempt to return the right of free choice to the voters of Belarus. It is not the problem only of the political parties, but it is the problem of more than seven million Belarusian citizens with the right to vote“, – the chairman of the United Civil Party Anatoly Lebedko said.

Janez Lenarcic talked about his meetings with Foreign Minister Sergey Martynov and the head of Lukashenko’s administration Vladimir Makeev. According to him, Belarusian authorities showed the desire and the will to work with them to improve the legislation. At the same time the head of international delegation stressed that one should not expect radical and rapid changes. “Belarusian authorities would like to do it slowly and carefully”, – he said.

Anatoly Lebedko informed ODIHR delegation about the actions which were taken by the United Democratic Forces to return «the right to fair elections» to Belarusian voters.

“The bill with the amendments and supplements to the Electoral Code was sent to administration of Lukashenko and ODIHR. The authorities have a wide choice how to improve legislation and law enforcement practice”, – the politician noted.

“I cannot “dance” with the government while Belarusian citizens cannot gather to initiate legislation”,Janez Lenarcic said.

Among the politicians who have taken part in the meeting are Vintsuk Vyachorka, Sergey Kalyakin, Alexander Milinkevich, Anatoly Lebedko, Anatoly Levkovich, Nikolay Statkevich and the head of Minsk office of the OSCE Hans-Johan Schmidt.
