On 9 January 2009 Uladzimer Siakerka, Chairman of the oppositional Belarusian Party of Communists’ Homel regional office, received a reply from the UN Human Rights Committee.

‘Dear Mr.Siakerka, We are honoured to inform you that your communication submitted on 17.09.2008 was accepted for consideration by the UN Human Rights Committee,’ says the letter.

The politician is trying to appeal the decision by Homel town authorities to ban a social picket. Before submitting his claim to the UN Human Rights Committee, Ulazimer Siakerka had exhausted all domestic remedies of legal protection, including the Supreme Court of Belarus.
