04_bojelko_oleg_2000-192x.jpgAccording to www.belaruspartisan.org, the former General Prosecutor of Belarus Aleh Bazhelka may soon retake office or be offered the post of head of the Supreme Court. President Lukashenka has had two meetings with Bazhelka lately and is said to be willing to see him among his teammates again.

At first, Bazhelka was offered the post of the Minister of Justice and a compensation for the years out of office. However, he declined the offer but demanded he could be allowed to resume a number of cases against the key Belarus Officials, including the Secretary of the Security Council Sheiman and the notorious riot police commander Paulichenka. Lukashenka is in two minds.

The Belarusian authorities are said to be on the brink of a dramatic reshuffle. The General Prosecutor Vasilevich is likely to take over the post of head of the Supreme Court, being unable to perform his duties efficiently enough. The 65-year-old head of the Supreme Court Valiantsin Sukala is about to retire. Besides he has recently fallen into disgrace with the President due to a series of corruption cases among Belarusian judges. And, finally, Bashelka will naturally fit into the post of the General Prosecutor of Belarus.

There is a strong probability that Bazhelka will be appointed General Prosecutor. However, the information revealed is an evidence of a strong opposition against Bazhelka in Lukashenka’s administration. Meanwhile, the ex-prosecutor refuses to comment on the situation.

Bazhelka was dismissed from office in 2000 after the General Prosecutor’s Office arrested Paulichenka and issued an arrest warrant against Sheiman on a charge of kidnapping and murder. Formerly called Quasimodo by Belarusian journalists, Bazhelka is reputed to be a noble and daring professional.

Experts say the incoming changes may appear to be a hard blow for the existing bureaucratic hierarchy of the Lukashenka presidency.
