Solidarity act, Kiev

Journalists and representatives of public and human rights organizations organized an action of solidarity with Belarusian associates arrested in Minsk during and after the protest action of December 19 in Kiev near the building of Belarusian embassy.

About 50 people took part in the action. They poured out red paint in front of the embassy as a symbol of blood shedded by Belarusian citizens who made a stand against the results of presidential elections during protest action in Minsk.

Ukrainian public activists who stand against outrage of human rights in Belarus appealed Belarusian authorities with a demand to release the participants of the protest action who were imprisoned and to stop mass repressions against opposition.

“Dear President,

Representatives of Ukrainian non-governmental organizations and public activists we strongly remonstrate against gross violations of Republic of Belarus’s liabilities in the field of human rights observed during the last presidential elections.

We are overly concerned with the facts of riots and searches in the offices of public organizations and mass media, groundless arrests of public activists, journalists and representatives of political opposition. We strongly condemn violence and cruelty of law enforcement organs of Republic of Belarus towards the participants of the peacefull assembly of December 19, 2010.

We, who signed this application, demand that the authorities of Republic of Belarus:

-urgently stop impediments in actions of journalists and human right defenders and stop pursuit of political opposition;

-carry out an effective investigation and fair court proceedings towards all representatives of law enforcement organs of Republic of Belarus who showed themselves cruel in suppressing peaceful assemblies;

-publish information about all the arrested people including reasons of the arrest and location of the arrested and immediate release of all people who was put into custody lawlessly”.

Participants of the action wanted to turn over the signed petition to the embassy, but at the embassy the human right defenders were told through an interphone that no application are accepted, only by post.

All those who wish to sign the petition can do it on-line.
