2009 30/10

On 30 October 2009 the UN Human Rights Committee has registered an urgent individual request under the number 1910/2009 of mother of Andrey Zhuk, who was sentenced to death in Minsk regional court. This was reported by a lawyer, human rights activist from Brest Raman Kislyak.

The woman appealed to the Committee on 27 October after the Judicial Panel for Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus did not satisfy the appeal of her son and left the Minsk regional court verdict intact.

In accordance with a special procedure, the Geneva office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights sent the Republic of Belarus a notification about the registered request and demanded not to carry out the death penalty until the case is pending before the Committee.

“We believe that the right to life of Andrey Zhuk has been violated, and we hope that the Committee finds the violation. We will work to replace the death sentence to another sentence,” – Raman Kislyak noted.

Recall that on 12 October the UN Human Rights Committee registered the individual request of Vasil Yuzepchuk, sentenced to death penalty in the Brest Regional Court.
