On 9 September the protestant church “New Life” called for support to the Special Representative on the infringement of rights of believers of the UN Human Rights Committee. Protestant society asks to intervene in the situation urgently.

According to BelaPAN, the appeal describes the situation of the community and focuses on the illegality of all judgments with respect to the church. The believers point out that they have exhausted all legal remedies in the country to assert their rights as outlined in the Article 18 of the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Belarus signed along with the majority of UN members.

According to the church lawyer, Mr. Siarhei Lukanin, when the authorities would make the demolition of building, the Special Representative may propose the Belarusian government to suspend all actions in this case pending the legal investigation by the UN Human Rights Committee. When the Committee recognizes the violation of the rights of believers, then the authorities will be obliged to restore them, and the leadership of the International Monetary Fund can stop the funding of Belarus, said the lawyer.

By the way, on 9 September the Deputy Prosecutor of the Maskouski district of Minsk, Mr. Kiryl Mazouka, drew up a protocol on the administrative violation on the pastor of Church “New Life”, Mr. Vyachaslau Hancharenka. The reason is that the believers refused to let the representatives of executive power in the building of the church.

It is worth to recall that the Minsk city council is trying to take the building from the church since October 2005.
