The authorities decided not to punish the oppositionists with the administrative arrests in order “not to spoil the figures.”

17 members of street protest against the introduction of Russian troops on the territory of Belarus were fined by the Tsentralny District Court in Minsk. The hearings were not open for public. All the detainees were fined ranging from 175 thousand BYR to 875 thousand BYR. Activist of the civil campaign “European Belarus” Zmitser Barodka and the leader of “Young Front” Zmitser Dashkevich were punished by the largest fines.

According to the words of human rights activist Valiantsin Stefanovich people released after the hearings told that they were beaten after being detained both in the patrol wagon and in the police department. Human rights defenders will appeal to the prosecutor on the facts of these illegal actions.

As noted by Stefanovich, the Belarusian authorities have adopted the tactics of avoiding the punishment of oppositionists with the administrative arrests in order “not to spoil the figures.”

“Such tactics aims obviously at misleading the international community, especially the European Union structures, which will discuss the question of the abolition or continuation of sanctions against Belarus in November. And this tactics of Belarusian authorities is absolutely erroneous. We will testify that the freedom of peaceful assembly is still not realized through such actions of police officers and the Belarusian authorities. The freedom of peaceful assembly was very limited, and remains so” – said human rights activist in an interview to “Euroradio”.
