On February 23, 2009 Vitsebsk resident Siarhei Kavalenka appealed to the National Intellectual Property Center of the State Committee on Science and Technology, expressing his opinion and offered to withdraw the certificate number 25281 issued to the trademark “Bulbash”.

According to the applicant, the word “Bulbash” undermines respect for the Belarusians, causes rejection of the Belarusian culture and national life, speaks of the inferiority and the imperfection of Belarusians. Besides, the word “Bulbash” is not a literary term, but has long been recognized as an offensive and derogative nickname of Belarusians.

He disagreed with the emergence of products with the same name, because he believes that this contributes to the incitement of national enmity and insults the national honor and dignity of the Belarusians.

Unable to find the understanding during the internal procedures to protect his rights, on 19.09.2009, Siarhei Kavalenka submitted a complaint to the UN Human Rights Committee (see below).
